Show Up for Racial Justice @ Sacred Heart

White people have a responsibility to show up for racial justice.

This is our work to do, for the dignity of all people, and for justice to be realized in this country. It is in our interest if we want to be whole human beings; if we want a robust and inclusive democracy; and if we want loving and just communities in which our most vulnerable neighbors are cared for.

For far too long, racism and white supremacy have kept the many divided for the benefit of the few. We know those in power rely on keeping those of us who are white silent and separated from movements for change. We are bringing white people into organizing to shift the balance of power toward justice in this country.

There are practical, actionable ways that you can begin today to change yourself, your relationships, your community and our society.  Show up at our next action or meeting and join our movement. Email carols@sacredheartcs.org to learn more.

Our Approach

SURJ in the South Bay affiliate is housed at Sacred Heart Community Service and draws from Sacred Heart's community organizing.

Though white people have the responsibility to organize other white people to show up for racial justice, we do so in relationships of accountability with people of color-led organizations. SURJ@SHCS is in relationships of accountability within Sacred Heart with the immigrant rights committee, PASOS. SURJ@SHCS also has relationships of accountability with Silicon Valley De-Bug and the Rapid Response Network in Santa Clara County.

Our Story

SURJ@Sacred Heart held its first meeting in December 2016 in the wake of the election and rising attacks on people of color. SURJ in San Jose is an affiliate of the larger national network of Showing Up for Racial Justice chapters. We are based out of Sacred Heart Community Service, which has invests organizational resources into SURJ work.
